Understanding Subtle Energy Therapies

...the Subtle Energy Therapies

by Lori E. D'Ascenzo

"Any healing that has meaning as all has to to come from higher levels if it is to have consequence."--Suki K. Dancer

The most profound and lasting methods of healing work on the body at the atomic or energy level, rather than at the physical level. That is because it addresses our essential life-source.

Scientists now know that all consciousness resides within all valance electrons orbiting our atoms, and not within the brain as previously believed. These unpaired electrons randomly circle around the perimeter of each atom seeking to pair with their opposite. This results in a magnetic field. We call it an aura or electromagnetic field.

Since everything we think, everything we believe, each experience we have and the total sum of our evolution is recorded within these valance electrons--our essential life source--this is where healing must begin if we are to affect complete and permanent healing. The Chinese have acknowledged and respected this for thousands of years. Western cultures are only now beginning to catch on.....

ACUPUNCTURE  A highly complex and multi-dimentional discipline and system of diagnosis ACUPUNCTURE dates back over 7,000 years. Its effectiveness has been legendary throughout the world for eons and it is recognized by the World Health Association. But awareness in North America grew only after 1971, when diplomatic relations between China and the U.S. were relaxed.

The Chinese were the first to acknowledge the existance of a sustained flow of electromagnetic energy traversing the body. They discovered a complex network of twenty-two electrical "con-duits" that circulated energy and neural impulses to parts of the body from the vital organs. By examining the quality of energy flow and its re-lationship to the specific nature of each organ's functions, they were able to determine a system of maintaining proper balance.

We now have the technology to detect and monitor these pathways using Electro Meridian Imaging (EMI). However, classical practitoners determine meridian balance by measuring the pulse, examining the tongue and face and asking questions, or by employing muscle testing.

There are more than 1,000 points where the electrical pathways or meridians pass close to the skin. The ear alone has in excess of 100 sites! These are the points used in all energy therapy. While traditional needle Acupuncture is probably the best known technique employed, a variety of methods and variations are used to restore and maintain energy flow.

Because it identifies and corrects imbalance, Acupuncture is effective for chronic and hard-to-diagnose illnesses, overtaxed nervous systems, stress, immune deficiences, emotional condi-tions, and addiction therapy, all areas where traditional medicine is impotent. This is because energy imbalances will produce symptoms and pain without obvious answers to the cause. What's more, a restriction or blockage in one area can affect the entire body!

When energy flow is restricted it backs up, creating pressure and excess in some areas and weakness or deficiency in others. Too many protons condense in the wrong places, impeding the flow of electrons through the major channels of the body.

By using needles, heat, pressure, electrical impulse, sonar, vibration or a lazer beam on a mer-idian point, energy can be stimulated. In addition to disengaging blockages, stimulation activates the immune system and the entire digestive tract, as well as triggers the release of neuro-peptides and hormones, including pain-relieving Endorphins. These biochemicals influence the body's own internal regulating system and natu-ral healing abilities, which, in turn reduces inflam-mation and promotes healing. In addition, the endorphins create a euphoria or sense of emotional and physical well-being.

Although in some cases there may be a slight healing crisis, emotional release, or changes in appetite, sleeping habits and bowel or urination patterns, these are not serious and eventually prove positive. There are some limitations to each method of application. For instance, people with pacemakers should avoid electronic Acupuncture.

While primarily designed as a preventative approach, Acupuncture addresses more than 100 different physiological disorders and can also be used in place of anesthesia during surgery, dentistry or caesarian childbirth. In these cases the patient can remain awake and alert without feeling any pain or discomfort. Acupuncture can also be combined with other types of therapy and treatment.

Classical Chinese Acupuncture takes years of study to master and is highly complex and subtle in its approach. It treats the deeper cause by studying the patient as a unique individual with a multitude of mitigating factors to their condition. Western Acupuncture is more basic, simply addressing the symptoms, or using localized Meridian Therapy on the hands, ear or finger and toe nails. This provides more temporary relief and is effective for com-mon maladies, headaches, stress and addiction control.

Meridian Therapy is the name denoting acupuncture techniques that do not penetrate with a needle. These include Acupressure, Shiatsu, Lazer Acupuncture, Electrical Nerve Stimulation and most of the subtle energy therapies.

Laser Acupuncture, used primarily to relieve stress, depression, lose weight or calm addictions, is completely painless. Employing a gentle lazer beam to stimulate the central nervous system and trigger endorphins, it is more than 80% effective in eliminating smoking without negative side effects, especially when used in conjunction with counselling

In classical Acupuncture, a series of hair-thin disposable stainless steel needles are inserted into specific meridian points. So fine that up to four will fit inside the barrel of a hypodermic, the needles are solid and smooth-pointed so that they do not bruise, irritate or cause pain upon insertion. The degree of pain is comparable to a mosquito bite. There is no injection of any substance, but the treatment may be augmented by adding heat or electrical impulses to the needles.

Sensations differ from person to person. As the needle is inserted, it is twisted to catch or stimulate the energy flow. This may create a mild to moderate heaviness, fullness or tingling. Once the needles are in place, there should be no significant discomfort and the client simply lies quietly from 15 minutes to an hour. There may be a mild disorientation or feeling of deep relaxation, particularly after the first treatments.

As with all energy therapies, to enhance the value of the procedure do not eat an unusually large meal immediately before or after your treatment. Do not over-exercise (including sex) or consume alcohol or sedatives within 6 hours. Also, avoid caffeine and cigarettes for at least 2 hours. Continue with any prescription medication and try to rest following therapy.

QI GONG  Another ancient oriental healing form that focuses on maintaining proper energy balance is QiGong. Pronounced chee kung, this non-invasive progressive self-help therapy relies on specific breathing exercises, flowing body movements and postures, mind control, relaxation, and meditation to induce the body's various levels into harmony. The primary goal is to circulate energy unimpeded through the network of the meridians. Translated Qi Gong means life-force energy cultivation. There are several variations and spinoffs including Tai Chi and many of the martial arts.

Used for more than 5,000 years to re-align and balance the body, create inner harmony, and combat a wide range of disorders from stress and depression to terminal illness, it is the theoretical basis for all Traditional Chinese Medicine. Actually, it is more of a philosophy, an attitude and a lifestyle encompassing the basic principles of universal law, than an actual therapy. The spiritual aspects of Qi Gong cannot be separated from the physiological and energy aspects. It integrates body, life essence, and mind as a functional unit and actually re-trains the nervous system, internal organs and mind. Physical health is maintained by using the spiritual faculties to manage energy. In this way, Qi Gong works however one intends.

The physical healing aspect of Qi Gong uses the hands almost like lightening rods to conduct universal energy to and from the body. In scientific experiments it has been proven that the molecular structure of water, as well as DNA and RNA can be changed by Qi energy, often quite rapidly. For this reason, it is being demonstrated as very effective in curing the incureable and in promoting longevity. The overall success rate is about 95%. A person may choose orthodox treatment and use Qi Gong to help tolerate procedures, minimize side effects and speed up recovery, or they may choose to use Qi Gong alone.

Since the Qi energy affects all levels of being, emotional healing, forgiveness and compassionate self-love also take place, contributing largely to physical well-being and happiness. Perhaps that is why it has found its way into hospices and hospital programs throughout the world.

It can be learned by anyone. You don't need the instruction of a Master to practice basic Qi Gong, but you do need one for more advanced forms. Practice and consistancy is important. It may be performed standing, sitting, moving or lying down and only takes about 15 minutes a day.

REIKI  Another healing modality that effectively channels high levels of universal energy is Reiki. Pronounced ray-key, literally translated, it means universal life force energy. Originating in Tibet about 5,000 years ago and kept a guarded secret, it was resurrected by Dr. Mikao Usui in the 19th century and passed judiciously to a select few.

Now anyone can learn it. It can be performed on the self or others, on plants, animals, the energy within one's home or work, and even the environment. As with Qi Gong, it can be used to effectively heal and enhance all aspects of one's life, since it creates an ideal balance and synergy between all levels of being. Probably most notable is its profound ability to open up higher levels of spiritual awareness and to release emotional and psychological issues without having to intellectually process them.

A Reiki practitioner learns how to channel universal energy through the hands and direct it to a specific source. Because energy moves through the healer and not from him or her, it is slightly different than Therapeutic Touch but very similar to Qi Gong. The healer also receives some of the benefits of the healing energy.

It can be used in conjunction with other healing modalities or used to promote recovery and relieve side effects from allopathic medical practices. It rapidly speeds the healing process, lifts toxins from the body, strengthens the immune system, corrects DNA and mutated cells, opens the chakras and clears the meridians, as well as gently relieving buried emotional trauma. The only contra-indications are for active blood clots, immediately following a heart attack, or before a broken bone has been set.

Using a hands-on method or holding the hands 2"-6" away from the body, Reiki can be performed fully clothed while sitting, standing or lying down. The Reiki practitioner begins at the head and works down the body, first front & then back, lightly placing the hands in specific positions to direct energy through the chakras, organs and glands, and along meridians.

A skilled practitioner can sense problem areas, emotional traumas, and scars or glitches within the aura simply by feeling shifts in the energy and tuning in to the client intuitively. They often feel a heat or tingling in the hands, particularly over areas that need more attention. The client may also experience a tingling, heat, rush of energy, pressure, or deep relaxed peace. Often the individual will fall asleep or achieve a relaxed, meditative state.

The auric field is then "combed" to liven it and the individual is grounded through the feet. Other techniques may be incorporated into the session. Entirely non-invasive, the treatment takes about an hour and leaves the individual feeling more relaxed, balanced and secure, as well as refreshed and invigorated. Spot treatments can be used to relieve pain, burns or headaches and to accelerate healing time on wounds.

It is not unusual to experience a profound emotional release during a treatment. Crying, welled-up emotions, laughing and occasionally anger are common and are handled with non-judgemental compassion by the Reiki practitioner.

Reiki students can achieve three levels of certification. The first teaches the basic hands-on techniques to physical healing and activates the ability to channel energy. This is ideal for those who wish to practice Reiki on themselves or family. The second level magnifies the energies to allow for emotional/psychological healing and teaches the student how to heal from a distance. Practitioners have aquired at least this level. Not everyone gains the third level. It is one of Master, where a high level of dedication and integrity is required and the individual accepts the commitment, responsibility and role of teacher in addition to healer.

THERAPEUTIC TOUCH is, by far, the best known and most widely accepted of the subtle energy healing modalities. Developed in 1971 by American nursing professor Delores Krieger, it is now used in many hospitals and cancer institutes across the country, practiced in 40 countries, and is taught to nursing students at more than 100 universities. There is extensive scientific documentation of its results.

Often confused with Reiki TT instead uses electromagnetic attraction. By passing the hands in a smoothing motion over the auric field 3-6" above the body, electromagnetic energy is activated through the interaction of both auras creating positive/negative electrical exchange.

Tests show that the inside of the right hand contains positive voltage while the back of the hand is negative. The opposite applies the the left hand. Experiments prove that negative energy calms and heals the body while positive energy strengthens it.

Pass your hand over the surface of a balloon. The static charge created between your hand and the balloon creates a strong pulling or magnetic sensation. TT affects the auric field in the same manner. Briskly rub your hands together and then pull them apart a few inches. Draw them together and apart several times and you will actually feel the magnetic pull that occurs. This is how Therapeutic Touch works. It effectively pulls energy to where it is needed, smooths out glitches and rouch areas, and livens up weak spots. More than that, it actually increases oxygen-rich hemoglobin in the blood.

TT effectively accelerates healing, reduces pain, calms stress and lowers blood pressure. It can be used on premature babies, coma victims, hospital patients and arthritics. Like Reiki, it cannot do harm and will always provide some benefit. A full treatment takes only 20-30 minutes.

POLARITY THERAPY is a hands-on technique that combines elements of reflexology, shiatsu, reiki, therapeutic touch, acupressure, and craniosacral therapy. It connects positive and negative poles within the body to stimulate a current, re-establish proper energy flow, and ground the individual.

The hands are placed in precise positions on opposite sides and angles of the body. The positions are always repeated in reverse to ensure balance. Sometimes the body is gently rocked. A tingling, pins-and-needles sensation can often be felt as the energy begins to properly circulate. Repressed emotions may surface. Often used to augment other holistic modalities, Polarity Therapy is actually a comprehensive system of whole living that encompasses diet, exercise and positive attitude, as well as therapy.

COLOUR THERAPY is a nobel-prize winning technique that uses the unique vibrational energy of light spectrum colour to induce healing. As a therapy it can be applied in several ways--through absorbing coloured light into the skin and chakras, by inhaling colour, drinking solarized water, using coloured filters over the eyes, and by visualization. It can be augmented by the use of colour in the environment and apparel, since col-our has psychological impact on attitudes, as well as a sympathetic influence on the aura.

Each colour generates a very specific, subtle vibration that harmonizes or blends with the various vibrations of the chakras, organs and tissues. For instance, red oscillates at about 437 trillion per second. Yellow vibrates at 510 trillion. While the physical body is too dense to respond significantly to these high frequencies, electro-magnetic energies are highly sympathetic. A resonance is created.

SOUND OR VIBRATIONAL THERAPY  Of all the available energy therapies, probably the most profound is Sound Energy Dynamics. It uses the vibration of tuning forks to massage the chakras and aura, as well as to unblock meridians. The technique is an adaption of the ancient Tibetan practice of using metal or crystal "singing" bowls to open and clear the chakras.

Based on the principle that sound emits vibration waves in patterns known as fibinacci spirals, this subtle technique actually raises the level of the body's own vibrations and alters DNA. Fibinacci spirals are naturally occuring corkscrew patterns of energy coiling upward at an angle of exactly 51.3 degrees. In nature, this precise axis conducts oscillating energy. It occurs in DNA and silicon dioxide, two components of all life.

On a basic level, by using a tuning fork that res-onates at the same pitch and rate as the chakra, a sympathetic vibration is set up. This opens, strengthens, and clears the chakra. On a much higher level, silicon dioxide within the body acts as a conductor for the resonation and relays messages on a cellular level throughout the body. This stimulates the body's functions. DNA is also sympathetically stimulated and strength-ened by the fibinacci spirals.

A specific high quality stainless steel tuning fork is used for each chakra and meridian. There are a full octave in all. The client comfortably reclines fully clothed on a table. As with the majority of holistic therapies, soft music and dimmed lights are used to create a relaxed ambience.

To start the treatment the practitioner manipulates the feet to get an idea of the client's physical state. This also acts as a grounding measure. Then, tuning forks are struck to initiate vibration and, beginning at the feet, are touched to a meridian point. They are also gently passed over the body to stimulate the auric field. The session ends with a short hands-on Reiki-like treatment. The session takes up to 1 1/4 hours, leaving the individual feeling euphoric, more focused and relaxed.

There are three depths of Light and Sound Healing. The first focuses on the physical, emo-tional, mental, memory and unconscious levels of an individual. Emotional issues are released easily and without intellectual processing. For most people this healing is sufficient. A deeper level gently blends these five elements into synergy, integrates the left and right brain functions and awakens connective pathways between the chakras. The most profound level of LIght and Sound Healing animates an energy grid that lies dormant in the auric field around the body.

Vibrational therapies can take many forms in our everyday life. Drums, harps, violins--all musical instruments are based on the vibrational resonance of sound. Certain notes resonate sympathetically with the chakras and meridians. That is the specific function of chanting in meditation.

No matter which therapy or combination of treatments you chose, it is important to drink plenty of water afterward. This helps to conduct energy on a cellular level, and also to flush out toxins that may surface.

A healing crisis may occur, particularly after the first session. This results from buried toxins being lifted to the surface, and from the body's attempts to adjust itself to homeostasis. Symp-toms can range from headaches and fatigue, to general achiness and intensified emotions. The more an individual detoxifies and physically prepares the body for vibrational therapy, the less likely after-effects will be felt.

You will probably be required to sign a consent form prior to any therapy. Do not expect to obtain miraculous results in just one treatment. Depending on the severity and duration of an existing problem, it may take several sessions to dislodge and eliminate. However, improvement usually escalates with each subsequent treatment.

Energy therapies are not covered by any medical insurance plans. Costs for sessions run from $25 and up, depending on the length of treatment and services performed. ~~
