The Basic Tenets of Alternative Therapies

and how they differ from orthodox medicine

Every Alternative or Complementary Therapy or health service bases itself on several basic tenets that are radically different from the principles of orthodox medical care.  The first is 'above all do no harm.'

The second tenet of Alternative Medicine is the realization that your physical body comprises only 25% of your overall health and well-being.  You are made up of four elements--emotional, physical, psychological, and spiritual/energetic that must work in complete balance and harmony in order to maintain perfect health.  When you attempt to adjust only one of these elements, you create further imbalance.

The third tenet of Alternative Medicine is the understanding that symptoms are, in fact, the body's attempts to correct itself.  Symptoms are actions the body takes to expel toxins or pathogens, maintain functions when insufficient nutrients are provided, or adjust to injury or trauma.  Suppressing symptoms through medications only creates different symptoms orside-effects as the body again tries to correct itself.

Alternative Medicine doesn't treat symptoms.  Instead, practitioners seek the root cause of a health issue.  They eliminate the root cause while supporting and enhancing the body's own efficient self-healing capacity, so that you can return to perfect health without side-effects or developing additional health problems.

Alternative Health professionals do not claim to heal you--they know your body heals itself.  Instead, they support and enhance your body's innate ability to heal itself, and provide critical elements thatare missing in orthodox medicine--comfort, nurturing, understanding, compassion, and, most importantly, individualized care.

Alternative professionals recognize that every person is an individual, every health issue stems from a different set of circumstances.  Therefore, no one treatment or product is right for everyone.  What works for one, may not be right for another.  Alternative health professionals also help you to become self-empowered by teaching you how to take pro-active responsibility for your own health and well-being.   ~
