'Night of Terror' Nov. 15, 1917 when the warden at the Occoquan Workhouse in Virginia ordered his guards to teach a lesson to the suffragists imprisoned there because they dared to picket in front of Woodrow Wilson's White House for the right to vote. These brave women from the early 1900s made all the difference in the lives we live today. Remember, it was not until 1920 that women were actually granted the right to go to the polls and vote. Forty prison guards wielding clubs and their warden's blessing went on a rampage against the 33 women wrongly convicted of 'obstructing sidewalk traffic.' By the end of the first night in jail, those women were barely alive. For weeks, the women's only water came from an open pail. Their food--all of it colorless slop--was infested with worms. All women who have every voted, have ever owned property, have ever enjoyed equal rights need to remember that women’s rights had to be fought for in Canada as well. 2009 is the 80th Anniversary of the Persons Case in Canada, which finally declared women in Canada to be Persons!
European man (and all in North America as descendants of European man) seems slow to emotionally evolve. Man is slow to recognize that he is an equal and integral part of all nature and all living things and not master holding dominion over all around him. European man’s arrogance and superiority has precipitated untold pain and suffering to the planet and all living things since the dawn of religion. Religion holds that man is superior, created in the image of God and that animals are on this planet to serve man. And we have come to hold this tenet true without question for eons. We seem to have forgotten that religion in all of its expressions is, in fact, a creation of man. Less than 200 years ago, man practiced slavery as he refused to recognize that people of dark skin were human…. slavery still goes on today throughout the world, including North America. Less than 100 years ago women in North America were not recognized as people, but were considered ‘property’. Less than 50 years ago coloured people were not treated as people and given the same basic rights as other people. Now, realization that animals are sentient beings is, at last, beginning to dawn. But, that is only due to rational scientific research and not man’s deeper sensibilities. Laws are being passed to protect animals and our attitudes are slowly changing as we come to realize we are not the only beings with feelings. Still, the question arises that if a form of life is not sentient, do we have the right to kill or abuse it at random? Although the year 2012 has been predicted as the end of mankind, I believe it may actually herald the ending of mankind as he has previously behaved and thought and the emergence of a ‘new’ human consciousness. Perhaps 2012 will initiate an awakening, a more enlightened view of the world and a more respectful and intelligent approach to our integral place in this world and on this planet. We can only hope …

“Treat the person, not the disease” Dr Edward Bach
Maya Abdominal Massage: Ancient Healing for Modern Lives By Nancy Crawford, RN, CMAMP, RM
After decades of working in the healing arts, I accompanied a friend to a seminar in Belize on Maya Abdominal Massage (MAM). Once in Belize, my healing took a whole new direction. It didn’t take me long to realize the tremendous power this ancient healing form has and the myriad ways it could benefit my clients—whether they’re seeking relief from pain, looking to conceive, going through pregnancy, dealing with digestive disorders, or wanting to address or prevent prostate problems.
The Power of Maya Abdominal Massage Mayan Abdominal Massage is a non-invasive form of massage that focuses on the position and health of the pelvic and abdominal organs. MAM repositions and aligns organs in order to maximize the flow of blood, lymph, nerves, and energy in the body. Displaced organs can restrict the flow of these elements and the resulting congestion is the cause of many ailments for both men and women.
Misalignment of organs occurs for many reasons. Often the demands of our everyday lives require us to do things that cause our organs to shift, for example, standing for long periods of time, sitting for long periods of time, pregnancy and childbirth, falls, injuries, or car collisions.
MAM is a holistic method based on the premise that the body can heal itself but may require help to do so. A MAM practitioner will gently work to realign the organs and once the organs are gently repositioned, the body can get to work on its own! My first experience receiving a Maya Abdominal Massage (from a 78 year old Mayan mid-wife) was so invigorating, I felt as if I wanted to jump off the table. After their sessions, my clients have told me how wonderful they feel-balanced and pain-free.
MAM also goes hand in hand with recommended dietary and lifestyle changes, so practitioners are educated in many areas including massage, anatomy and physiology, herbology, nutrition, and emotional and spiritual healing. This aspect is very important to me. As a healer, I like to provide my clients with tools that they can use for their own empowerment. Clients are encouraged to take an active part in their own healing by learning simple, safe, and easy-to-learn self-care techniques that can be used at home.
MAM and Women’s Reproductive Health MAM has a positive effect on numerous conditions for both men and women; however, it is best known for the benefits it has for women’s reproductive health.
Dr. Rosita Arvigo refers to the uterus as a “powerhouse of energy transformation”; Don Elijio Panti considered the uterus to be a woman's center and maintained that “if a woman’s uterus is out of balance, so is she."
The uterus has a huge job to do, and it is held in place just by ten different ligaments. It shifts easily, which can have a negative impact on a woman’s health. MAM works to correct its position and the result can be an elimination of many disorders including PMS, painful periods, and fertility. MAM also has a positive impact on conception, pregnancy, and childbirth.
MAM - Not Only for Women’s Issues People of any age, gender, or walk of life can benefit from MAM. For instance, MAM has provided relief for clients suffering from hip and back pain. It can also help relieve many common digestive disorders. MAM is especially beneficial for the prevention and treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
Several of my clients have sought out MAM as a last resort; they have been told that their condition is chronic but they’re not willing to live with it. MAM is a simple, effective, non-surgical way to find relief. Visit www.mayanancy.com for testimonials.
During a session with a Maya Abdominal Massage practitioner, (see www.arvigomassage.com. for a list of practitioners) work will be done on the mid and lower back muscles, sacrum, lower and upper abdomen as well as pelvic bone structure and alignment. The pubic area is the focal point for MAM so it is important that individuals feel comfortable with their practitioner.
The treatment sessions I conduct are very interactive—my client and I talk through the session, especially because I’m working in very sensitive areas of the body and I need to let them know what I’m doing. I explain the entire massage so my clients feel comfortable and open to the work. I also want to know what my client is feeling as I touch her or him because that will determine some of the treatment choices that I make. Like any deep tissue massage, we may release emotional issues. Especially, say, around issues of reproductive health, massage can prompt an emotional breakthrough.

"There is no duty we so much underrate as the duty of being happy." Robert Louis Stevenson
Beware of Garbage Trucks by David J. Pollay
How often do you let other people's nonsense change your mood? Do you let a bad driver, rude waiter, curt boss, or an insensitive employee ruin your day? Unless you're the Terminator, for an instant you're probably set back on your heels. However, the mark of a successful person is how quickly one can get back their focus on what's important.
Sixteen years ago I learned this lesson. I learned it in the back of a New York City taxi cab. Here's what happened.
I hopped in a taxi, and we took off for Grand Central Station. We were driving in the right lane when, all of a sudden, a black car jumped out of a parking space right in front of us. My taxi driver slammed on his breaks, skidded, and missed the other car's back end by just inches!
The driver of the other car, the guy who almost caused a big accident, whipped his head around and he started yelling bad words at us. My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy. And I mean, he was friendly.
So, I said, "Why did you just do that? This guy almost ruined your car and sent us to the hospital!" And this is when my taxi driver told me what I now call, "The Law of the Garbage Truck."
"Many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of garbage, full of frustration, full of anger, and full of disappointment. As their garbage piles up, they need a place to dump it. And if you let them, they'll dump it on you.
When someone wants to dump on you, don't take it personally. You just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on. You'll be happy you did."
So this was it: The "Law of the Garbage Truck." I started thinking, how often do I let Garbage Trucks run right over me? And how often do I take their garbage and spread it to other people: at work, at home, on the streets? It was that day I said, "I'm not going to do it anymore."
I began to see garbage trucks. Like in the movie "The Sixth Sense," the little boy said, "I see Dead People." Well, now "I see Garbage Trucks." I see the load they're carrying. I see them coming to drop it off. And like my Taxi Driver, I don't make it a personal thing; I just smile, wave, wish them well, and I move on.
One of my favorite football players of all time, Walter Payton, did this every day on the football field. He would jump up as quickly as he hit the ground after being tackled. He never dwelled on a hit. Payton was ready to make the next play his best.
Good leaders know they have to be ready for their next meeting. Good parents know that they have to welcome their children home from school with hugs and kisses. Leaders and parents know that they have to be fully present, and at their best for the people they care about.
The bottom line is that successful people do not let Garbage Trucks take over their day. What about you? What would happen in your life, starting today, if you let more garbage trucks pass you by?
